"You're looking chocolate brown"

The title comes from a line that someone said to me this morning as I was walking to the bakery. He asked how the sun was treating me and I said "Great, how's it treating you?" That's when he replied with "Good. You're looking chocolate brown." Haha. That's exactly what I'm going for!

Can I just tell you that I'm absolutely loving this whole 2-week spring break deal in Belize??? Really, it's something that I think the U.S. can learn from Belize! As you devout blog followers already know, I spent the first week of my 2-week spring break (sorry, I just had to say it again!) in Guatemala exploring the beautiful island town of Flores and the massive Mayan Ruin of Tikal and then went to San Ignacio to embark on a grand adventure of climbing, crawling, and swimming through a deep cave that was once a place of sacrifice for the Mayan people. Definitely the most exciting spring break of my life, and that was only week 1!

For the second week, my roommates, Rachel's fiance (Casey), and I headed out to Caye Caulker for a whole week of relaxation, yummy island food, and sun! This is probably my favorite place in all of Belize for the simple fact that I am a complete "beach bum". That's right. I've spent 5 whole days doing nothing more than waking up with the sunrise, laying on the sand or dock for countless hours, swimming in the refreshing Caribbean Sea, eating delicious food (Did I mention that there's a bakery on the island? Enough said!), and then ending the day laying in a chair on the beach with a cool breeze blowing over me. Sound like paradise? I'd say so. Seriously, I'm a girl who has spent lots of time on the beaches off the Emerald Coast of Florida and who knows the essential places to go in Panama City like the back of my hand, but I've never felt so relaxed as I do on this island. It might have something to do with the fact that everything is on a much smaller scale than anywhere else I've ever been, there are no loud car horns or people yelling and carrying on down the strip, you can walk EVERYWHERE you want to go on the island in less than 5 minutes, and I've never once had to take a number and wait for hours to be seated in a restaurant. Do I have you dreaming of Caye Caulker yet? I hope so. If you're looking for ritzy resorts and high rise condos, or even AC for that matter, Caye Caulker doesn't fit your vision, but I guarantee that you'll fall into "island mode" less than 5 minutes after arriving here. When I take Adam Sandler's advice and go to my "happy place", this is it!

I'm sad to say this is my final day in paradise before heading back to the real world of Belize City for my final 3 weeks... 3 WEEKS! 21 DAYS! ____ HOURS! (didn't feel like doing the math on that one, plus there's really no such thing as time on the islands and I'm in "island mode", remember???)
This little guy rode on the water taxi with us to Caye Caulker. He kept sticking his little nose out to get fresh air.

Caye Caulker has all the essentials... it would be easy to live here:
Hair Salon
Cute little clothing shops
Art Gallery
Lots of water, Coke, Fanta. I think even DadDad would be happy living here... he could drive the John Deere tractors around!
Nice docks for relaxing, sun bathing, and reading.

And, finally, my cute little house on the beach complete with a white fence!
This is Marilyn, our friend at our hotel. We thought she was pregnant, but it turns out she's just a little over weight (hence the "do not feed me" note on her collar).
She grew pretty attached to me during the week and would follow me from the chair to my room door and then lay down at  the door until I came out.
One night she took a nap on the towel I had laid out to dry. Later that night she wondered off somewhere and someone came and took this towel and the one Jessica had laid out. I guess they needed the towels more than we did, and I guess Josh will be getting a new towel in his future... sorry!

  1. I do hope you are planning to make a scrapbook album of your trip when you return home, Vanessa. You have some truly wonderful photos! Mix that with all your experiences you have to journal and you have an album for a lifetime....a scrapbooker's dream!

  3. I was thinking the same thing as I read Brenda's comment... early start to the day???

And, yes, I will definitely be doing some kind of scrapbook if I can ever figure out where to begin with all the hundreds of pictures I have. Maybe I should convince my parents to add a room onto the house just for scrapbooking, and I;ll just lock myself in for a few months to get it done!

  4. I think something was awry. I can't remember being up that early. That was Monday morning and I was up at 5:40 a.m. as usual. I don't think I could make such an interesting coherent post at that time of day even though I am a morning person. Something technical must have posted the time wrong. Or maybe my memory is at a loss and I really WAS up at 4:37 a.m. Wow.....I mean, really, the blog is interesting and all that, but in my right mind, I wouldn't anticipate getting up at 4:37 a.m. to post. At least I have entertained the commentors and the comment readers. FYI...it is now 7:50 a.m. on my oven clock. ;-)
