First Day of School

Today was my first day of school at Hummingbird Elementary, and it was GREAT! I'm in the grade called Infant 1 which is the equivalent of 1st grade back in the States. Considering the temperature here today was in the 60's, I was surprised to see nearly all of my students wearing heavy coats and complaining about the freezing weather! The first thing that happened at school this morning was an assembly of the students on the rooftop of the school which overlooks the ocean... it's beautiful to say the least! The  principal introduced myself and the other girls at the assembly, and then we started the school day back in class. There's a lot of time devoted to individual discussions about what's going on the students' lives like what they did over the weekend and things happening at home. The students in my class told me I was pretty like 100 times today which was kind of odd to me, but something I guess I can get used to! lol. They also told me how much they liked my hair... I thought this was funny considering I had let it just air-dry the night before and didn't do too much other than brush my teeth to get ready today! My class also participated on a dance class to prepare for the variety show that will be held at the school in May. I'm bummed that I'll miss it because watching the little boys twirl around the girls was super cute! I'll definitely have to take pictures at the next dance class! I was also surprised to learn that the school day is only from 8:00-1:00, including lunch time. It will definitely be different from the usual routines that I've seen in schools back home, but I'm really excited about it!

After school we ate with one of the KSU professors who came down to make sure we were all settled in nicely, and spent some time just relaxing and chatting in a cute outdoor restaurant across from the sea.  Then, we took a cab (my first cab ride EVER!) to the local fruit/vegetable market, where I bought a papaya and some bananas.  We'll probably go back later this week when they have a better selection and hopefully mango!
